Founding fund for the Mask Society preparatory office

A society connecting the people who study masks, make masks, and wear masks.

Masks span theatre, religion, craft, and psychiatry. Yet Japan has no place that connects these fields sideways.

Ten years of running a mask shop showed us researchers, Noh performers, sculptors, collectors, and people who simply want to wear masks — all holding the same questions without knowing of each other. A learned society is the machine for putting them in one room.

The preparatory office will publish Bulletin No. 0, hold the first research meeting, and draft the society's charter.

Funds go to running the office and printing the bulletin. If the goal isn't reached, nobody is charged.

Risks and challenges

Having chosen the form of a learned society, the real risk is not "nobody comes" but "everybody comes and leaves unconnected". Noh, religious studies, sculpture, psychiatry — these people speak different languages, and if the first meeting is designed badly there is no second. The preparatory office therefore produces Bulletin No. 0 first, so there is common ground on paper before anyone is in a room together.

The second risk is our own position. Kamenya Omote is a company that sells masks, not a research institution. Wariness about a business launching a society is entirely reasonable. The office is scoped to draft the charter and then hand the running of the society to researchers.

The bulletin may also slip. Contributions depend on other people, and we won't impose deadlines on them.

Can I join if I'm not a researcher

Yes. Putting makers, wearers, and collectors in the same room as scholars is the entire point. We plan to separate presentation formats by whether they are peer-reviewed.

When does Bulletin No. 0 come out

About six months after the office is founded, depending on how contributions arrive.

What about membership fees after founding

Undecided. Drafting that is part of the preparatory office's job, and founding members will be consulted before anything is fixed.
