An original deck for Uso no Tobacco Shop

A playing-card shop in Asakusabashi, Tokyo, finally makes the one deck it most wants to sell.

Uso no Tobacco Shop sells playing cards from all over the world — hundreds of decks on the shelves. And yet there is no deck that carries the shop's own name.

Seven years behind the counter taught us which decks get picked up and which stay on the shelf. We are pouring all of that observation into one deck the owner can honestly say he wanted for himself.

The specs are set: an embossed tuck case, linen-finish stock, and court cards modeled on the shop's regulars — faces you feel you've seen somewhere, but never quite like this. We are in talks with a long-established card printer in Japan.

Funds go to the first print run and plate costs. If the goal isn't reached, nobody is charged and the plan is shelved.

Risks and challenges

The most concrete risk is the printer's minimum run and unit cost. Card printing gets expensive fast in small quantities, so the goal is set at exactly the number of decks we can afford to print. If the goal isn't reached, the plan is shelved and nobody is charged.

Then there is the stock. You cannot decide on a linen finish without touching it, so we have samples from the printer sitting on the shop counter. That step is there to avoid a "this isn't what I pictured" after the run — and it pushes the production start later.

Last, the people whose faces become court cards. Using someone's face means nothing proceeds without their say-so. If we can't gather enough of them, the design changes.

We sell playing cards; we are amateurs at printing them. So we follow the printer's schedule and don't invent shortcuts.

What happens if the goal isn't reached

Nothing is charged. The card registration is simply voided and no money moves. We'll tell you by email.

When would it arrive

Four to six months after the goal is reached. Once the printer's schedule is fixed we'll post the real dates in an update.

Can you ship overseas

Yes. We cover the shipping, but customs duty and import tax at your end are yours. For the EU, import VAT applies regardless of the amount.

Will the deck be sold in the shop

Yes, once it's made. But backers' copies are set aside first, so it reaches the shelves only after shipping is done.
